Since qualitative data is useful for providing interpretation of a phenomenon, the methodology was based on a search of key words and phrases that were contained in the common themes and recurring ideas in the reviewed articles in order to strengthen the evidence for an interpretation of what constitutes alternative distribution channels.

The present research was based on every possible combination of the above topics. A meta-search engine (MetaLib) was employed that had access and compared the most well-known academic databases (ABI/INFORM Global, Academic Research Library, Academic Search Premier, Emerald Journals, ISI Web of Knowledge). The first phase generated a total of 820 papers published within the last 20 years. The reduction process was based on the following criteria: duplicated results were deleted, and only articles referring to agricultural products were selected. Impact Factor is one measure of the relative importance of a journal, individual article, or researcher to literature and research (EASE), 2007, so if we base on journals with high impact factor the reliability could create more solid research. Following this, the abstracts of 240 articles were read focusing on any term related to ‘alternative distribution channels’. This procedure resulted in 94 articles from 64 journals; more specific, 15 articles with a range of impact factor greater than 0.299 to 1.135 and 79 articles with a range of impact factor greater than 1.268 to 4.652 (Table 1).
